Witsand

Witsand, Western Cape, South Africa — a peaceful seaside village and nature-oriented holiday destination

  • Whale Watching: Witsand is famously called South Africa’s “Whale Nursery” because each year from around June to November large numbers of Southern Right whales migrate to the warm, sheltered bay to calve and nurse their young. This makes it one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the country.

  • Kitesurfing & Water Sports: The Breede River estuary’s large, flat lagoon and steady winds create ideal conditions for flat-water kitesurfing, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Other activities on the water include windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing.

  • Fishing Paradise: The Breede River estuary is rich with fish species such as Kabeljou (Kob), Spotted Grunter and Garrick, making Witsand a favourite for shore, estuary and deep-sea fishing.

  • Birdwatching: The mix of river, estuary, and coastal habitats supports diverse birdlife, including eagles, flamingos, kingfishers, oystercatchers and more — a treat for birdwatchers.

  • Witsand Beach stretches for about 4 km of wide, white sand, recognised as a Blue Flag beach for its cleanliness and facilities. It’s great for beach walks, swimming, exploring rock pools and relaxing.

  • Nearby you’ll find Witsand Nature Reserve with several short walking trails, offering quiet spots to enjoy the scenery and possibly whale views.
